This past weekend, Infinity War screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely took part in ComicBook.com’s Twitter-based “Quarantine Watch Party” of both Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, and during this event, the two shared all sorts of behind the scenes details and photos. Among these was a photo showing that, at one point, Infinity War nearly had Doctor Strange don Iron Man’s armor.

This on-set shot of Benedict Cumberbatch wearing the upper half of Tony Stark’s iconic suit was from an alternate version of Infinity War’s scene where Iron Man and Spider-Man rescue Strange from Thanos’ telekinetic minion Ebony Maw aboard his spaceship. According to McFeely, this was one of the “other versions of this rescue,” and ultimately these were all scrapped for being “just too awesome (and long) to keep.”
This will likely disappoint fans of Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme, but at least they’ll be able to get their fix with the next Doctor Strange movie, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, in two years’ time.
Avengers: Infinity War is available on Blu-Ray and digital, and is streaming on Netflix and Disney+.
