Ori and the Will of the Wisps is coming exactly five years after the release of its predecessor Ori and the Blind Forest, which was met with massive amounts of praise upon its release. First revealed back in 2017, Ori and the Will of the Wisps has been delayed a couple of times from an originally projected 2019 release, but now that the game has gone gold, it should be smooth sailing from here.

Going “gold” is an important part of any game’s development; it essentially means that the developer has gotten its game to a point where a master disc can be pressed, on which every other subsequent copy of the game is based. So, Will of the Wisps going gold is as good a signal as any that Moon Studios is right on track (possibly even a bit ahead of schedule) with the game, given that Ori and the Will of the Wisps’ release date is set for March 11. That’s more than 40 days away right now, which should leave plenty of time for finishing touches on the game–certainly, considering when the majority of games go gold, it’s an impressive achievement. Going gold isn’t necessarily the end of the development process, but it signifies the game is “done” enough for the developer to focus on patches and smaller bug fixes.

In addition, those who own an Xbox Game Pass can go ahead and pre-load the game already, as Will of the Wisps comes as part of the subscription service. Everyone else will have to buy the game at $30 for its standard edition or pay more for the game’s collector’s edition. The latter comes with a steelbook case, an art book, and two different music discs, for fans of Ori especially excited for the sequel.

Either way, fans can breathe easy with Moon Studios’ “going gold” announcement, since it’s highly unlikely for a game to hit any more delays once it reaches that stage. Everything is looking good for this highly-anticipated sequel.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps releases on March 11 for PC and Xbox One.
